BATT4EU Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda 2024 (SRIA)

BATT4EU Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda 2024 (SRIA)

BATT4EU

BATT4EU is a Co-programmed Partnership established under Horizon Europe, the Framework Programme for Research and Innovation of the European Union.

It is a collaboration of the European Commission and European battery R&I stakeholders, united in BEPA – which regroups all the battery stakeholders from the European Research community.

The partnership aims to achieve a competitive and sustainable European industrial value-chain for e-mobility and stationary applications.

The Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda (SRIA)

In order to meet the objectives set by the European Commission of establishing by 2030 the best innovation ecosystem in the world to stimulate a competitive, sustainable and circular European value chain for batteries and to drive the transformation to a carbon-neutral society, the BATT4EU partnership has renewed the Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda (SRIA) with its 2024 edition.

This document, which replaces the BATT4EU SRIA of 2021 and the Batteries Europe SRA of 2020, came out in February 2024 and lists the key strategic actions that the European battery R&I community can derive from the collaborative research projects proposed by the BATT4EU partnership. It provides the main guidelines for Horizon Europe work programs and funding in the coming years.

The SRIA is the result of contributions gathered by the Batteries European Partnership Association (BEPA) and Batteries Europe from hundreds of European battery experts, organized into working groups and task forces each covering different battery-related topics.

Key points

The SRIA focuses on six priorities needed to improve competitiveness and the European battery industry:

  • Ensure that research results (BATT4EU) reach gigafactories and markets, through pilots, demonstrators and better decision-making supported by digital tools.

  • Increase Europe's strategic autonomy by reducing dependence on critical foreign raw materials, supporting local and circular supply chains, and supporting research into different battery chemistries, including sodium-ion technologies.

  • Make batteries more affordable to accelerate the ecological transition and maintain the competitiveness of European industry by improving batteries based on more abundant materials and promoting better integration into end-use applications.

  • Improve the flexibility of battery manufacturing and recycling systems in order to reduce lock-in effects and react quickly to changes in a rapidly evolving sector.

  • Implement a safe and sustainable design framework for batteries, building on European strengths and helping to reduce emissions and the use of substances of concern, improve safety and enable the integration of smart functionalities.

  • Support the continuity of excellent European battery research and cooperation between universities and industry by improving access to research facilities and pilot lines, using research projects to build up a skilled workforce, and avoiding research gaps through continued funding, which will encourage talented researchers to stay in Europe.
